The Cat and the Queen of Hearts: A Midnight Louie Las Vegas Adventure (Five Star Standard Print Mystery Series)
Published in Hardcover by Five Star (December, 1999)
Author: Carole Nelson Douglas
Average review score:

Another great entry!
This book is another great entry in the Midnight Louie series, giving us the back story on Darcy McGill and Steven Austin. I really enjoy finding out about the characters before we got to know them in the other Midnight Louie "The cat and the..." books. If only I didn't have to wait until June to find out what happens next...

I'm glad they these books are now in print, as they give the series an added dimension.

Interesting, Historical Fiction, Perfect Book for a 9-l4 boy
Very interesting book about a cattle drive, a boy and his friends. Very descriptive without being boring. A good story for any boy. My sons, ages 6, 9, and l4 have read, or been read to, the entire series. It has some parts where Nathan gets into trouble and has to figure his way out. There are gun slingers and fights. Nothing dirty. He does call upon God to help him. Any boy Christian or not would enjoy this book. Very well written, a good story. A boy (or girl) could easily relate to this. It's one of those books I (a mother) looked forward to reading to my sons.

Earthtones: A Nevada Album
Published in Paperback by Univ of Nevada Pr (November, 2002)
Authors: Ann Ronald and Stephen Trimble
Average review score:

The True Motherlode of Nevada
Nevada has always struggled with what advertising people would refer to as an image problem. With the exception of the gaming meccas of Las Vegas and Reno, the last century considered it so barren and worthless as to be the ideal location for a Nuclear Test Site. The current generation has deemed it worthy of being a national Hazardous Waste Dump. It is rare indeed to hear a tourist or travel agent describe Nevada as having beautiful scenery or landscape as is often the case with New Mexico, Utah, Arizona or Colorado. This book, in words and pictures, paints a different picture and what a sight it is.
Accomplished writer Ann Ronald has spent 30 years viewing Nevada landscapes and geography with a different aesthetic eye than most observers. Renowned photographer Stephen Trimble has the uncanny ability to record on film some of the most remarkable images of what Ronald describes as "one vast deserted landscape of color and shadow and aesthetic dimension." Together, with the written word and unforgettable images, they paint a picture of the other Nevada that is unforgettable in it's beauty and clarity.
Ronald describes the colors of Nevada, which is at heart the theme of the book, with such clarity that the purple sage, teal sky, mountain mahogany and myriad shades of vermilion, orange and gold virtually leap from the page. However, if the reader does not have an acute imagination for such colors there are the stunning photographs of Trimble that leave no doubt of the magnificence of this state. Seldom does the collaboration between writer and photographer produce results of such beauty and hope.
Highly recommended for readers interested in the "other" Nevada.

Endless Nevada

Endless Nevada is Endless Pleasure
By Sam Bauman, Nevada Appeal Staff Writer

Coffee table books are common as snowflakes in December, but every once in a while one comes along that is photographically ahead of the rest.
Such is the case with "Endless Nevada, a Photo Essay" by photographer Larry Prosor and Nevada magazine publisher and Nevada Appeal travel writer Richard Moreno.
From the brilliant book jacket of embossed gold of a man fishing in the Truckee River to the picture of a lonely wagon road in the Jarbidge Wilderness, this is a treat to the eye.
There's plenty to read as well as vistas to enjoy. John. L. Smith, Las Vegas Review-Journal columnist, offers a foreword. The late Robert Laxalt adds an introduction, ending on a magnificent panorama by Prosor of "Moonset Over Independence Ridge."
Each chapter is headed by a slightly washed-out photo across two pages, with a small photo insert. The first chapter is titled "Overview." In it, Moreno offers a fast-moving history of Nevada, from geological formation millions of years ago to 1931, when the Legislature approved gambling and the six-week divorce residency.
The next chapter, "The Land," is a stunning collection of Prosor photographs, such as an open trail in Thomas Canyon, Elko County, and a surreal vision of geysers in the Black Rock Desert. Subsequent chapters include "Searching for Wraiths," "The Past," "Mealtime," "The People," "Gathering Places," "The Places," "A Cowboy Needs a Poem," "The Cowboys," "America's Outback," "The Cities" and "End of the Road."
Moreno writes of the Basque immigrants and the opening of their hotels and boarding houses, catering to the Basque sheepherders who descended from the hills for a good meal and soft bed.
In "Gathering Places," Moreno writes:
"Saloons have long been rural Nevada's social clubs, political meeting halls and psychiatry couches. Intimate secrets, heated words, unkeepable promises and tall tales have all be passed at least a time or two over a beer. In most small Nevada towns, the local watering holes are the places where nearly everyone meets, at least sometime during the week, to swap gossip, make deals, or just socialize. If a small town is perceived as something organic, then the saloon is its soul. It is where opinions are formed, decisions are made and, occasionally, consensus occurs."
In the introduction to "The Places," an especially striking photo shows two tiny people atop a gigantic tower of rock in the Ruby Mountains. You know no helicopter brought them to that peak.
In "A Cowboy Needs a Poem," Moreno writes:
"Cowboys are part of what defines Nevada and the West. Despite having been overly romanticized in movies, books, songs and television shows, there is really something appealing about a cowboy. Perhaps it is the perceived freedom of living out under the stars, or the way the cowboy myth neatly parallels traditional American beliefs in self-determination and hard work. For whatever reasons, cowboys fascinate us."
This is only a brief description of the wealth of beauty in photographs and graceful prose that make up this book. [For the money], it's definitely one for the coffee table.

This was a great compliment to our training program.
Our end users loved receiving these guides as a hand out at the end of classroom training. Our Help desk calls have reduced and that leaves us with more budget to support other projects. I get compliments from many of our new users and they like the independance these handy guides provide. It makes my department look good when we manage to make the transition to new software look easy. Thanks Nevada

Exploring the Southern Sierra, West Side - A review by Kris
I am one of those people who grew up in the city and until about seven years ago, hardly ever placed my feet on unpaved ground. I recieved a copy of Jenkins' book as a gift and began taking some of the easier trips in this beautiful country. The book is full of descriptive detail, well thought out hikes, and enjoyable car tours. The original author, J.C. Jenkins, actually travelled every inch of the territory described in the book with a mileage wheel. After his untimely death, his mother,Ruby Johnson Jenkins, set about the task of rewalking every trip in order to keep the book up to date. There is no second-hand information in either of the books(the companion book is called "Exploring the Southern Sierra,East Side"). I have been of many of the longer trips now and find the books to be reliable, interesting, and informative.

Fielding's Las Vegas Agenda (Serial)
Published in Paperback by Fielding Worldwide (September, 1997)
Authors: Joyce Wiswell and Kathy Knoles
Average review score:

Great reference, a must have traveller's guide
This comprehensive guide offers useful information on every possible thing to see and do in the Las Vegas Area. Reviews of venues, sights, and sounds are great. Recommendations made by Ms. Widwell of the famous Las Vegas buffets were fabulous. Prices quoted for tickets and fees were a little low: approximately $2-$5 per person per admission should be added to the printed prices in the book. The guide is easy to read and follow making it an excellent reference. "Las Vegas Agenda" became an indispensible tool before and during my stay in Las Vegas in 1998. I would recommend that all vacationers who plan to visit Las Vegas purchase and make use of this guide. I was very satisfied.

Fifty Miles from Home: Riding the Long Circle on a Nevada Family Ranch
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Nevada Pr (December, 2001)
Authors: Linda Dufurrena and Carolyn Dufurrena
Average review score:

Highly Recommended
This is a wonderful book. The pictures of the Nevada landscape, from a very talented photographer who sees light in a magical way, are exceptionally beautiful. Particularly touching are the photographs of the authors' family and other workers at their ranch; one could wish that more of these very personal shots had been included.

The text is a perfect match for the photographs, conveying the flavor of life on the ranch and the exceptionally close family ties that develop when three generations work together with a common purpose. The reader is left hoping that this very exceptional environment and life style can be maintained in the generations to come; however there is a poignant description of the forces working against this outcome.

This Nevada ranch is a unique spot: the book makes an excellent gift for anyone (particularly western fans) who may not have the opportunity to visit the area in person. Highly recommended.
